“The Bible tells us to flee from sin,” she said. “I don’t think making a cake for it helps.”

“I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people — not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world.
But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one.
For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. Purge the evil person from among you.” (1 Cor 5:9-13)
Honestly, I always feel uneasy whenever I read about Christians who refuse to do come into contact with people who obviously still live in sin because they don’t know Christ yet.
Did Jesus do the same? Didn’t he come to save sinners? And isn’t it our job to spread the gospel in this world as well?
How could LGBT people, Muslims, Hindus, esoterics, agnostics, atheists, and so on, ever come to know the love of God if Christians who are said to be Christ’s body refuse to love them?
I don’t mean that they – the Christians – should ever drop their beliefs on what is right and what is wrong, or that they should stop to live accordingly. However, Jesus didn’t tell us to change the world by showing sinners that we despise their behavior. Instead He said,
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Mt 5:14-16)
I think there is a difference between simply being the light through the indwelling Spirit, and telling unbelievers (even in a roundabout way) who are not indwelt by Christ’s Spirit about how they should look like if they were enlightened. Such behavior seems to me not being generated by the Holy Spirit at all.
Faith without works (LOVE) is considered dead (Jas 2:26). “And if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.” (1 Cor 13:2)
Indeed, faith and unconditional love work together. As to me, I do know that it feels so good to be loved when being bad…
Matthew Henry wrote the following on Mt 5:13-16:
“If a man can take up the profession of Christ, and yet remain graceless, no other doctrine, no other means, can make him profitable. Our light must shine, by doing such good works as men may see. What is between God and our souls, must be kept to ourselves; but that which is of itself open to the sight of men, we must study to make suitable to our profession, and praiseworthy. We must aim at the glory of God.”
(Matthew Henry Concise Edition)
Or as the apostle Paul said,
“Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God, just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved.” (1 Cor 10:32-33)
Is the only way I can show love to an alcoholic to buy him a bottle of his favorite whiskey?
Oh, who knows how many ways there are to show love…?
Then let us love the alcoholic in ways that don’t reinforce his alcoholism.
Now that’s alright with me, Mike.
My expectations are being more than met when His Love stroking him is finally revealed as a deathbed surprise. At the latest so to speak – before the universe is done…
